Rails By The Bay: Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I'm a bit apprehensive about displaying my work. I'm concerned my work doesn't measure up to that of others. Should I bring my models to this event?

A: Absolutely! Remember, this event is NON-COMPETITIVE!! The goal is not to compete with your fellow modelers or demonstrate your mastery of modeling techniques. Rather, it's a chance to share yoru projects, learn new techniques and ideas from others, talk with your fellow modelers, and let the work of others inspire you to do more modeling.

Q: How many models can I bring?

A: As many as you like. We will have plenty of tables available for you to display as many models as you care to bring.

Q: Can I display dioramas or structures?

A: Yes, you can display virtually any model that is railroad-related: locomotives, rolling stock, structures, vehicles, dioramas, and more. Any era, any prototype, any scale.

Q: Can I display documentation with my models?

A: Yes you can. You're welcomed to display photos, diagrams, drawings, and other reference information showing how you built the model. We will provide information cards you can fill out on site if you don't have prepared information.

Q: I want to bring a Free-mo module. What do I need to do?

A: We are not hosting a Free-mo layout this year due to space limitations. We hope to resume with a Free-mo layout as part of the event next year.

Q: Will there be manufacturers at this event?

A: Several manufacturers have expressed interest in attending this year's event. While nothing is confirmed yet, the PNW RPM event staff is working to confirm attendance, and will release more information in the near future.

Q: Will there be a raffle at this event?

A: Yes, as is typical at RPM meets, we will raffle prizes to those who purchased tickets (available at the door). These prizes are donated by manufacturers and local hobby dealers to help support the cost of this event.

Q: Will food be available at the event?

A: We will not be serving food at the event, but there are numerous restaurants and coffee shops close by, and we will provide a list of restaurants and directions for you to use.

Q: Are there discounted hotel rooms available?

A: Hotel rooms are not available thru the RPM event, but the Seattle area has numerous hotels available within a 5-10 minute drive, including a Sliver Cloud across the street from the event venue.

Q: The last swap meet I attended cost me five dollars. How come this event is more?

A: First off, this isn't a swap meet. There are no tables of for-sale items, nor are dealers going to be there selling model supplies. This is a day-long event where you can come and see the models created by other model railroaders in the Pacific Northwest, listen to well-known modelers present clinics, meet manufacturers, and run trains on the Free-mo modular layout. We're hoping you can spend the whole day with us.

Second, this is a not-for-profit endeavor. We're not here to make money, so all fees collected go towards covering the event's costs. For example, the last two events basically broke even (well, close enough - we were actually about 60.00 dollars in the red when all was said and done). As a result, costs for meeting space and other logistics must be covered by the admission fee. Other costs (like the hosting fee for the website you're viewing) are donated by individuals for the cause of promoting modeling in the Pacific Northwest.

Q: Can I bring my kids?

A: Children are welcomed provided they have constant adult supervision. The typical RPM meet has lots of models on display without any sort of physical barrier or other form of protection. Parents are expected to supervise their children at all times to prevent accidental damage of others' models or displays. Children's admission will be charged at the normal adult rate.

Q: Hey, you didn't answer my question! How can I learn more??

A: Contact us and we'll be happy to answer any question you may have.
